I was invited to bake pie for "One" WUCF tv here in Orlando, Florida. I start at the 19 minute mark, this is fun to watch and learn a bit about me.
My time with my mom was baking in our kitchen when I was growing up in South West Michigan, baking was our special time together. My mom, Mary, would compete with pie at the Kalamazoo County Fair in the fall and I would help her bake pie months before the start of the fair. I remember the year she finally won a Blue ribbon for Apple Pie. My love for baking started with her, I love you mom. My other influence was from a baker friend, Karl Boonzaaijer who owned Boonzaaijer Bakery in Kalamazoo, MI. Karl's son in law Marty owns and runs the bakery now. When I was younger I would ride my bike to Karl's bakery and visit with him about cake. I am proud to say our Cake, Bavarian Cream fillings and Buttercreams are similar to Karl's, he and his family are good friends. www.boonzaaijerbakery.com
After moving to Florida with my wife Marcia, I missed my mom's pie and Karl's cake. I started slowly to learn about real baking, because of living near Disney and all the resorts I was able to mentor with some of our local Pastry Chefs. Jump ahead few year, I felt I was qualified to compete in the National Pie Championships and at the Florida State Fair. Competing on Cup Cake Wars in 2011 was a thrill as was the two years the Food Network filmed us for "The Food Network Challenge" Professional Pie Championships.
Hilton's Gourmet Bakery officially opened in 2005, with myself baking part time. Today baking is full time and we are currently looking for our own building to house Hilton's as well as our new little division that specializes in Gourmet Moonshine Cake. The Ole Whistlin Still Bakery bakes real Appalachia Gourmet Moonshine Cake and Pecan Pie. Visit; www.owsmoonshinecake.com to learn more about our wonderful cakes.
Thank you for visiting our site and be assured we can offer you the very best cake, pie, cookies, brownies and other delights for every day enjoyment, for your wedding or your celebration event.
We will be ending production and closing the bakery on January 14, 2017.
